Make a Shake, Make it Great: Use Sugar-free Syrups

shake

In the first ‘Make a Shake, Make it Great’ blog we discussed using diet soda and sugar-free flavored water. The next stop in this series is using sugar-free syrups in your shakes.

Sugar-free syrups probably represent the largest single source of shake flavorings, and they have no calories. None. Zero. Plus, they come in a huge range of delicious flavors.

You want fruit flavors? How about banana, black cherry, blueberry, cherry, huckleberry, lime, mango, orange, peach, raspberry or watermelon, to name a few?

You want dessert flavors? There’s almond, butterscotch, butter rum, caramel, coconut, cookie dough, English toffee, German chocolate cake, gingerbread, peanut butter, praline, pumpkin pie, salted caramel, white chocolate, and more.

Want to make it a party? There’s Amaretto, B-52, creme de menthe, Irish cream, Kahlua®, and more.

The possibilities here are endless: chocolate shake + banana, chocolate shake + caramel, chocolate shake + German chocolate cake, vanilla shake + peanut butter, vanilla shake + mango, vanilla shake + pumpkin pie, multigrain cereal + hazelnut, multigrain cereal + raspberry, multigrain cereal + Irish cream (after 5:00 p.m., of course). Heck, why not try a chocolate shake with caramel, French vanilla and Kahlua? Par-tay!

The basic recipe for a sugar-free syrup shake is 1-2 Tablespoons per shake. Because it is calorie-free, feel free to add more if you want to boost the flavor.

Since the sugar-free syrups have no calories, they are appropriate for all HMR diets (including Decision-Free) as well as Phase 2. Here are two recipes to get you started:

The Snickers® Bar Shake
6 oz. cold water
1 HMR Chocolate Shake (any variety)
6 ice cubes
1 tablespoon caramel sugar-free syrup
1 tablespoon peanut butter sugar-free syrup

Pour cold water and syrups into a blender. Cover blender and start blending.
Add one scoop or packet of HMR Shake mix.
Add ice cubes, one at a time, replacing the blender cover after adding each ice cube.
Continue mixing until ice is thoroughly blended—about 1 minute.

Vermont-Style Multigrain Hot Cereal
¾ cup water
1 packet HMR Multigrain Hot Cereal
3 Tablespoons pancake sugar-free syrup (tastes like maple syrup)
Optional: packet of non-caloric sweetener

Empty contents of cereal packet into a microwave-safe bowl.
Add ¾ cup water (not hot) and stir.
Microwave on HIGH for 90 seconds; stir.
Allow to sit for 1-2 minutes.
Stir in the optional non-caloric sweetener, if you are using it.
Pour the pancake sugar-free syrup over the top.

While a few stores carry the sugar-free syrups, perhaps the easiest way to find the flavors you want is to order them online. The three biggest syrup sites are:
Da Vinci: www.davincigourmet.com/products/sugar_free_flavored_syrups/
Monin: www.moninstore.com
Torani: www.torani.com

If you have any sugar-free syrup recipes of your own you would like to share, please post them here.

Okay, I've settled on what is my **absolute favorite ever** shake. It's GERMAN CHOCOLATE MOCHA! I make enough **base/concentrate* for 4 shakes at a time. In addition to increasing my shake usage, this is a huge efficiency. Here's the recipe......I start with 2 cups of Water in the blender. Now add 3/8 cup of Instant Decaf Coffee Powder, 2 heaping Tbsp. Unsweetened Special Dark Cocoa Powder, and 3 Tbsp. Splenda for Baking. Cover and process to blend thoroughly. Now I pour in DaVinci SF German Chocolate Syrup + DaVinci SF Kaluha Syrup + DaVinci SF Pancake Syrup each for a count of 6. Now I add 4 Chocolate Shakes (I use 70+). Process thoroughly. Finally, completely fill the rest of the blender with water (about 1 3/4 cups). Pour 1/2 of the mixture into a 1 quart jar (it will be almost completely full!) Add 10-12 large sized (tray) ice cubes one at a time and process on high until the blender is about to run over. Pour your Iced Mocha over ice cubes in a large insulated glass or cup and drink with a straw. Cover and stick the remaining blender full of shake in the frig. When you need a refill for your glass, just take the blender out, replace it on the motor and give it a brief buzz. Refrigerate the quart jar of shake base.concentrate for use later. It will keep nicely for several days.

Opens up a whole world of flavor, doesn't it? BTW: The bottles look huge, but I think little elves come into my house at night and drink it. Some flavors I need to buy every month! (Carmel, Pancake, and Cocoanut are the elves favorites)

Oh My Goodness!! I just got my first-ever Da Vinci Sugar-free Syrups today! I got Gingerbread, Pumpkin Pie and Peanut Butter flavors. The first thing I tried was a Gingerbread Iced Latte. All I can say is, "Move over, Starbucks!!" Right now I'm having a Pumpkin Pie. The flavor of this syrup is a whole lot more delicate. This is good, but I'll have to touch it up to get it just the way I want. I want to say thanks to everyone for the encouragement to try the syrups. This is a whole new world (after 22 years!). One other thing, I was amazed at how HUGE the bottles of syrup are, and my shipment arrived in just 2 days.

There are 3 big names in the Sugar Free Syrup biz: DaVinci: http://www.davincigourmet.com/products/sugar_free_flavored_syrups/ Torani: http://www.torani.com/cafe/products Monin: http://www.moninstore.com/prod_Lines.html?indexcat=3&indexname=Sugar%20Free%20Flavoring%20Syrups I'd say the most popular brand name seems to be DaVinci, but the other 2 have flavors not that DaVinci doesn't. As far as taste goes, all 3 are great.

I would really like some thoughts on brands of syrups. Do HMR clients have any preferences?
