Is Boston Up to the Challenge?

million pound challenge graphic

The city of Boston has been challenged! Although this time it isn’t one of our typical foes, like the British or the NY Yankees. This time the gauntlet has been thrown down by the Boston Public Health Commission and the Mayor. We have been challenged to lose ONE MILLION POUNDS and walk/run/hop/skip/crawl TEN MILLION MILES in the next year!

The citywide campaign, which debuted in late April, is dubbed “Boston Moves for Health”. It includes an interactive website where residents, which includes those of us who sleep within city limits and everyone at HMR who spends their work days here in Boston, can log on and sign up for the challenge. Participants can pick health goals, access resources like videos and articles, find community health events at little or no cost, access social media support, and monitor their progress.

This got me thinking; “hum, isn’t it nice to have this same type of community commitment, access to support and accountability right here at HMR during the TI Challenge?” Those of us in Boston can work to be role models for our friends, families, and communities as we collectively take on the Mayor’s challenge. What a great way to have HMR help the city reach its weight loss and physical activity goals!

Mayor Menino’s challenge isn’t a new concept. Oklahoma City lost a collective million pounds, and several other cities throughout the nation are adopting similar plans, meaning many of you can participate in your own communities. Check out your local resources and campaigns and see if you can’t be a steward of good health in your own community as well.

As of last week, Boston has collectively lost 824 lbs. and walked 3,139 miles….so we all have a ways to go! Now let’s all get out there and do some moving! Are you taking on the challenge, either in Boston, or in your local community?

Share with us your stories and successes…..what have you done to answer the call to action?

Since I work in the city, I have joined and I log the miles I run or walk in the city. [I walk a mile from the Back Bay Commuter Rail Station every day I come to the office]. I have contributed to some of the now 5086 miles that have been logged. The city is offering opportunities for family fun and free exercise classes. HMR's healthy habits can make a difference. Check it out!
