Scrumptious Health Food

The other day I had a “teachable” moment with my eldest daughter, Ariel. She is a very curious girl and asks me questions about absolutely everything and often stumps me! (i.e. How do mean people become mean? Why are there two pronunciations for the word read even though it’s the same letters? Etc...) But, nothing gave me pause more than when she asked me this… “Mommy, if healthy food is so good for you than why does unhealthy food taste so much better?” Aha, a $100,000 question if you ask me. I’ll admit, this is something I have wondered myself and have actually had angst about in moments of decision anxiety over which foods I should choose in any given situation.

Rather than get in too deep about my own inner struggle and confirm to her and commiserate with her that junk food does indeed taste better, I took a different approach. “Ariel”, I said, “I bet you could come up with many healthy foods that you absolutely love and still taste delicious, couldn’t you?" “Of course!” She replied. “Ok, so let’s go… tell me 10 delicious healthy foods that you can think of.” Here was her list.

  1. Cantaloupe
  2. Cherries
  3. HMR 70 Plus Chocolate (!!!)
  4. Salmon with soy sauce
  5. Edamame
  6. Trader Joe’s roasted corn
  7. Strawberries
  8. Rice cakes
  9. Clementines
  10. Green beans with garlic

What healthy foods do you focus on to offset the unhealthy ones that you also find unmistakably DELICIOUS? Sound off below…

What a great teachable moment and a great way to turn the conversation in a positive direction! It's so easy to focus on on the delicious foods we "shouldn't" or "can't" have that we lose track of the healthy foods we love! I'm such a fan of frozen grapes, carrots and hummus, and watermelon!
