The Kids are Back in Town

empty nest

Ah, the joys of a visit from the kids! I look forward to the stories of friends, classes, life decisions and just the chance to catch up. Sometimes the visits are planned, and other times come unannounced. It’s not uncommon for my son to drop by (he just moved into his own apartment close by us) for an impromptu “What’s for dinner and by the way I brought my laundry” visit. Even with the laundry, I’m still thrilled.

However, along with the pleasures of bringing the babes back into the nest, comes the challenge of having to blow up the “I can do what I want on my timelines” routine. In particular, I’ve found it can be easy to skip my before dinner walk in order to spend time getting the latest scoop. Is it just me, or can these kids talk? They always seem to have a lot more to tell me than I have to tell them. There is no way that I want to miss out!

So it occurred to me – some of the best conversations I have with my friends are while we’re out walking. Maybe there is a way to get my much needed 3 miles and still have my quality time with the family. A family that walks together stays together, right?

It has now become expected that during the visit, my kids and I hit the pavement together for a walk. We even switch-up the route depending on how much time we have – staying in the neighborhood or hitting other walking paths in town – and walk anywhere from 2.5 to 5.0 miles. My husband comes along any time that he can. So really, we get the best of both worlds; great conversation and quality time when the kids are back in town, as well as helping to keep the physical activity calories up! By the way, if you’re worried they’ll say “no” (I was too), give it a try. They may surprise you!

I have been walking every day and I plan to do so when my very fit 24-year-old daughter visits later this month. I think I may be able to keep up with her!

What a great idea, we should definitely help to get PA even on the holiday!

I can relate to your story Anne! I am also an empty-nester and I've taken up a similar practice with my kids (and grandkids). It's easy to do. We talk the whole time. I'm a much better listener because I'm not distracted by all the activities in the home and we are all getting in more exercise. Win/win!

When I started to read your blog, I actually thought you were going to say that you worked shorter bouts in during the day, or went for a long morning walk..I was totally surprised and impressed that you suggested on going for a walk with your family! what a simple, great idea! :)
